Join our Hospital as a Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellow

The MFM Fellowship and Good Samaritan University Hospital OBGYN residency program will be mutually beneficial in providing collaborative care for the patient. Residents rotate in their second training year on the MFM service. As a fellow, you will have the opportunity to develop added experience as instructors and supervisors of residents rotating in antepartum and on the labor floor. In addition, fellows will prepare and complete didactic presentations to junior trainees.

Quality Education

The fellow’s education focuses on the competencies and skills required to practice high-quality maternal-fetal medicine care for the community. We have the privilege of caring for a diverse population with different socioeconomic levels, cultural backgrounds, and acuity and complexity levels. When is your first fellow going to start?

  • Our first fellow will start August 1, 2025 if there is a candidate outside of the match.

How many fellows will you have each year?

  • We will take 1 fellow per year.

Why should I / would I train at a smaller program?

  • You will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with Attending Physicians and become integrated into our community. We are able to focus on your needs as you grow as a physician. Here you are not a number, but a member of the team each and every day. Furthermore, you will learn amazing on-the-job problem solving.  We have the appropriate consultants available to us, but you will be directing their medical decision making. Our smaller group allows for fellows to learn faster, have more procedures available per fellow, and perform better as a result of more individual attention, increased participation, and better communication between the faculty, mentors, fellows and residents.

What are the research requirements as a fellow?

  • Fellows will complete 12 research months devoted to research activities and thesis preparation. Faculty mentors supporting project completion will meet regularly to review progress and aid in development/guidance/completion.

How are the relationships with other services?

  • As a part of a community hospital, the relationships among departments are very collegial as we work together to provide for the needs of our patients. Fellows will work closely with other departments where they will collaborate with the primary team.

What is the relationship between attendings and fellows?

  • You work closely with your attendings. We view you as an “MFM attending in training” and as a general ob/gyn. As such, we allow you to grow and develop as an individual based upon your own special interests. We understand that you are learning and we understand that it is our job to foster your growth with individualized learning plans. Our attendings are dedicated to the program and to your advancement through the post graduate years of training.

What is the workload like?

  • During your outpatient rotations, the hours are 8am-4pm and generally inpatient antepartum follows a similar time with exceptions for unusual cases. The labor floor rotation will follow the typical labor floor attending schedule and off service rotations as per their usual rotation. The call schedule is with 2 in-house 12 hour shifts the first year and then the following 2 years 1 in house 12 hour shift and 2 home calls per month. See the full rotation schedule.

Will I be able to go to national conferences?

  • Yes, and we will encourage our trainees to attend these conferences which are supported by CME stipends provided to all of our trainees.

What criteria will you be looking for when selecting someone for an interview?

  • We want humble, empathetic, intelligent, hard-working people who strive to do the best for their patients while being committed to learning along the way.

How does your program plan to support fellows in their professional development? (e.g. mentorship, assistance with job placement after training, etc.)

  • You will have individual supervision throughout your training, didactics/conferences focusing on professional development. In addition, the PD will have an open door policy for any concerns or needs that you may have as you progress through the training. With regard to job placement, we have connections throughout the healthcare system and country.

Will fellows have input into the program?

  • This is a new program and we will take feedback and integrate it into the program. Additionally, fellows will have the opportunity to contribute to the decision making of the Program Evaluation Committee.

Our program values inclusion regarding race/ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, and background as it fosters a better understanding of the unique human experience in and out of the healthcare setting. We are committed to training culturally sensitive physicians reflective of the diverse population we serve. We strive to graduate fellows who demonstrate the importance of inclusion by providing equitable care for all patients. At Good Samaritan University Hospital, individual differences are welcomed, valued, and supported. We understand that an inclusive culture fosters a sense of true belonging. We know that we provide better care when our unique backgrounds overlap with the unique backgrounds of our patients.  We want you to know that no matter your own demographics, you are welcome here.

Dear Future Fellow,

Welcome to our Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program at Good Samaritan University Hospital! I am honored to be the founding director of this program and to invite you to join our vibrant and diverse learning community. As a maternal fetal medicine specialist, I love what I do. I have the opportunity to offer a position into what we consider our maternal fetal medicine family. We are a close-knit program with 4 maternal fetal medicine specialists and an abundance of ancillary physician colleagues in other specialties that understand maternal physiology and welcome a maternal fetal medicine fellow. Our large group of maternal fetal medicine sonographers and nursing staff as well as our front desk staff and practice managers work closely together at all of our offices, creating a team that is unified at all sites. We all look forward to adding a fellow with the additional teaching and learning that we all will benefit from.

Our program offers a comprehensive and balanced training in all aspects of maternal, fetal, and genetic procedures, with a mix of labor and delivery time and procedures. We are able to offer strong electives including women’s health cardiology and extensive diabetes in pregnancy education with a certified diabetes educator working directly in our office. Our faculty are experts in their fields and committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation of maternal fetal medicine specialists. Our curriculum is flexible and individualized, allowing fellows to pursue their interests and career goals.

We are a hospital with all the resources and talent needed to take excellent care of our patients and to support your education. Here, you will encounter an extensive and wide range of pathology that you will face in your future practice. With our faculty, you will learn from every patient you encounter. We want to recruit fellows who are dedicated to serving others. As a graduating resident, it is important to find a program that has a supportive environment and the right mindset to help you succeed and become the best possible maternal fetal medicine physician.

We invite you to explore our website and learn more about our program. We look forward to meeting you and sharing our passion for maternal fetal medicine with you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Diana Garretto
