Family Medicine Residency Program

The Family Medicine Residency Program at St. Joseph Hospital is a three-year ACGME accredited residency program that encompasses all of aspects of training needed to be a family practitioner proficient in managing a diverse patient population.

A Full Spectrum of Experiences

The Family Medicine Program offers a wide range of experiences, including structured rotations in Family Medicine continuity clinics, Hospital Medicine, OB/GYN, Pediatrics and Newborn care, Emergency Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Behavioral Health, Geriatrics and Palliative care, and various electives tailored to individual needs.

Continuity of care is an integral part of your training. Through a partnership with our continuity of care clinic, St. Joseph Hospital provides family health care to the the surrounding areas. Working closely with your attendings, you will play an important role at the health center and the community it serves. Here, as well as with rotations, you will establish and follow a patient base to ensure true continuity of care.

The academic component includes grand rounds, journal clubs, case presentations, guest lectures, patient rounds, board review/ ITE review sessions, simulation sessions, procedural sessions (Bioskills), OSCE, home visits and more. Throughout residency, you will provide instruction and guidance to junior residents and medical students. This develops a stabilizing force, which is imperative to the productive and successful learning process of both resident and student. You will also complete an academic/research project of publishable quality by your third year. This research component will allow residents to present at local, regional and national family medicine platforms and to contribute to the field of family medicine.

These combined experiences help you continue to evolve into a well-rounded and skilled expert in the field of family medicine and be able practice full spectrum family medicine upon graduation.

You are also required to participate in research/scholarly and quality improvement (QI) projects with an opportunity to present at local, regional and national family medicine platforms and publish in reputed FM journals.

Each resident is required to participate in scholarship activity. This requirement may be met by participation in, or completion of, any of the following:

  • A resident scholarly project within the department of family medicine
  • Institutional or regional research programs in which family physicians are actively involved
  • Original paper on health care related topic
  • Presentation at a state, regional or national meeting
  • Authoring a grant

St. Joseph Hospital offers a limited number of third and fourth year Family Medicine clerkship rotations each year.

The Family Medicine program provides students with exposure to a broad spectrum of pathology at a busy inpatient unit and outpatient offices. Students will focus on the practical application of their knowledge for chief complaints typically seen in family medicine settings.

While completing the rotation, students are treated as if they are part of the residency program and will participate in departmental activities such as resident conference, journal clubs, and social events. There are also medical student focused didactics, student case presentations, and procedural skills workshop.

What do you consider a “complete” application?

A complete application consists of your ERAS application, transcript, two LOR, and Dean’s letter. We will consider you for interview without USMLE / COMLEX step 2, but you must have taken and passed Step 2 prior to the ERAS closing date to be considered on our match list.

Do you consider foreign graduates? Which visa(s) is supported by your institution?

Yes, we consider foreign graduates. Our institution will support a J-1 visa.

What is the application/selection process for the program?

  • The St. Joseph Family Medicine Residency Program participates in the central application process organized by ERAS and the NRMP Match. Sample contracts will be available for review during the interview. For specific program eligibility, see How to apply.

What are the Admission Requirements?

  • Admission requirements can vary by program, but generally include a medical degree (MD or DO), passing the USMLE or COMLEX exams, letters of recommendation, Dean’s letter, a personal statement, and an interview.

Do you sponsor any Visas?

  • Yes, we sponsor J1 Visas.

Do you have students rotating in your department?

  • Yes, we have a robust student rotation. Medical students Year III and IV rotate at our campus for their core and elective rotations and residents will have the opportunity to work with and teach medical students.

How many hours a week on average do residents work?

  • Residents work an average of 55-70 hours per week.

What does the curriculum include?

  • The curriculum typically includes rotations in various medical specialties, outpatient/continuity clinic experience, inpatient hospital training, obstetrics, pediatrics, geriatrics and palliative care, behavioral health, elective rotations, research and scholarly activities and procedures relevant to family medicine.

How will residents be evaluated?

  • We have a 360 degree evaluation process whereby residents are evaluated on each of the core competencies, as required by the ACGME.

Do residents have an opportunity to evaluate faculty?

  • Yes, residents complete evaluations on all rotation attendings and faculty after each rotation and every 3 months for all preceptors at the Family Medicine Center using anonymous evaluations online via New Innovations Residency Management Suite. You will also be evaluating your senior residents when applicable and the program annually.

Are the attendings approachable?

  • Absolutely, this is one of the perks of coming to a community based program. Your education is the focus of the attendings, they come from a unique perspective of truly understanding residency education, which has a positive effect on the flow of communication. Faculty attendings have an open-door policy and are always willing to offer guidance and mentorship.

How does your program plan to support residents in their professional development? (e.g. mentorship, assistance with job placement after training, etc.)

  • You will be assigned a mentor. Mentor meetings will occur regularly to check in on your progress and guidance. The Program Director has an open door policy for any concerns or needs that you may have as you progress through the residency. With regard to job placement, we have connections throughout the country within departments of all types and family medicine fellowships.

Will residents have input into the program?

  • Absolutely. This is a new program and we will take ideas and feedback and integrate them into the program. Additionally, residents will have the unique opportunity to contribute to the decision making of the Program Evaluation Committee.

Will I be able to go to national conferences?

  • Yes, and we will encourage our trainees to attend and present their scholarly work at family medicine platforms such as regional, state and national levels which are supported by CME stipends provided to all of our residents.
