Matthew O’Brien, RN, BSN, CEN, is a dedicated team leader in the Emergency Department (ED) at Mercy Hospital, where he is committed to delivering the highest quality of care and comfort to all his patients handles an average of 35,000 patient visits annually. Matthew was recognized for being an extraordinary nurse with the prestigious DAISY Award. The Diseases Attacking the Immune System (DAISY) Award recognizes outstanding nurses for their skillful and compassionate patient care.
At an early age, Matthew knew he wanted to pursue a career in health care. “My mother is a nurse and a role model,” said Matthew. “I saw firsthand the comfort she provided to her patients, and I wanted to follow her lead.” One of Matthew’s guiding principles is to make sure his patients are taken care of like his own family.
He began his career as a phlebotomist at Mercy while attending school to become a registered nurse. In 2021, he began his current role and enjoys the fast-paced environment of the ED and caring for patients in critical condition. “I know I’m making a difference when I’m helping my patients and potentially saving a life,” said Matthew.
Matthew’s key to success is to never stop learning. His proudest accomplishment in recent months was passing the board exam for certified emergency nursing. “I will always continue to learn and grow and be a lifelong student,” remarked Matthew.
