Catholic Health’s St. Charles Hospital has once again earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization that sets standards for excellence in patient care. Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems in place to prevent harm.
“We are delighted to have earned the nation’s top distinction for patient safety with another ‘A’ from The Leapfrog Group,” said St. Charles Hospital President Jim O’Connor. “This is a true testament to our staff’s continued commitment to patient safety. We work diligently every day to provide the highest quality patient care, improve patient outcomes and enhance the overall patient experience. Receiving this prestigious Leapfrog recognition is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to our patients in Port Jefferson and surrounding communities.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program exclusively based on hospital prevention of medical errors and infections. Grades are updated twice annually in the fall and spring.
“Catholic Health, continually strives to ensure top-quality care across all our entities,” said Catholic Health’s Chief Medical Officer Jason Golbin, DO, MBA. “As our hospitals earn best-in-class rankings, we share these best practices across all of our facilities to foster a continuity of exceptional care throughout our system. We are very proud of our facilities that earned top hospital safety grades from the Leapfrog Group this year.”
St. Charles Hospital features four Centers of Excellence: Maternal/Child services, Orthopedics, Rehabilitation and Robotic Surgery. St. Charles is recognized as the region’s most comprehensive rehabilitation provider and is the only hospital on Long Island with CARF-accreditation for its inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation program for children and adults.
St. Charles also offers services in general surgery and surgical subspecialties, such as colon/rectal, urology, bariatric, neurosurgery, GYN oncology, female pelvic floor disorders, and ENT. In addition, St. Charles offers emergency medicine and acute care inpatient adult and pediatric medical care, with state-of-the-art adult critical care. The hospital’s subspecialty services include cardiology, pulmonary, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, nephrology, neurology, epilepsy, and stroke care. In addition, St. Charles has a state-of-the-art Center for Hyperbaric Medicine & Wound Healing, offering innovative treatments for chronic and non-healing wounds.
To further meet the needs of the community, St. Charles Hospital announced last year a $10 million emergency department (ED) expansion that will include 4,000 square feet of added space, with an additional 10 treatment bays and a large waiting room. The ED expansion will also allow for a separate waiting room and treatment area for those seeking medically supervised chemical dependency detoxification. In addition, the ED expansion will feature a fast track urgent care designated area for rapid assessment and escalation to a higher level as needed. The newly renovated ED will be completed in August 2024.
