Long Island Nurses Recognized for Excellence

Nurse leaders from Long Island’s hospitals and nursing education programs gathered Thursday, September 15, 2022 at the Water Mill, Smithtown, NY, to bestow recognition upon their nurse peers at the Nurse of Excellence Award Ceremony hosted by the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC). One nurse from each of the Hospital Council’s member hospitals was nominated for the award, which recognizes outstanding leadership and clinical practice. Deans of area nursing schools also submitted nominations recognizing nursing excellence in education and clinical practice. 

Nurse educator Barbara Timpug, MSN, RN, CCRN was Good Samaritan University Hospital’s nominee for this year’s event. This year there were 22 nominees total that were selected from a field of about 500 nurses at hospitals and teaching institutions from across Long Island.

Barbara’s achievements in nursing span the clinical and educational settings. She is a master’s prepared certified critical care nurse who demonstrates commitment, passion and enthusiasm for the field of nursing. Her current role is that of clinical educator for the Neuroscience Intensive Care and the Surgical Intensive Care Units. As an educator, Barbara is approachable and makes herself consistently available to staff. Her hands on approach is appreciated by all and admired by leadership. She is always willing to spend the time necessary to ensure staff is comfortable and patients are receiving optimal and safe care. 

Barbara is currently working with leadership to help devise a more comprehensive nursing preceptor program to ensure all nurses are given the tools and resources to be successful in their patient care. Her dedication is through her volunteer-first vision to teach classes throughout the facility and cover education responsibilities for other nursing departments. Her knowledge and expertise is highly regarded. She participates on multiple committees and projects including the building of the medication library for a new hospital wide infusion pump system. She consistently encourages staff to continue their education and obtain certification in their specialty area.  

Barbara’s passion for nursing is evident in her practice. Throughout her diverse nursing career (that has spanned multiple continents), she has promoted a positive image of the nursing profession. She is active in the school community and instills that sense of outreach in her children as well. Her enthusiasm, commitment and passion for the profession has made her an excellent preceptor and mentor as well as an exemplary colleague and role model.
