Mercy Hospital emergency department staff

Catholic Health Mercy Hospital’s (Rockville Centre, NY) Emergency Department (ED) nurses have earned an Emergency Nurses Associate (ENA) 2024 Lantern Award, recognizing Mercy nurses for demonstrating exceptional and innovative leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research.

As part of the application process, emergency departments are encouraged to share stories that highlight a commitment to patient care and also the well-being of nursing staff. The ENA award reinforces nurses’ commitment to quality, safety, innovation and a healthy work environment.

“Our ED nurses are extraordinary, compassionate and dedicated, and this award reinforces their commitment to taking care of our patients, visitors, and each other,” said Mercy Hospital’s ED Nursing Director Louis Calderon. “I couldn’t be more proud to be part of this team, who, not only strives for excellence every day but are resilient and continuously seek for ways to care for patients at the highest level”.

As a recipient, Mercy Hospital nurses will receive a physical award at the ENA annual conference in September to display in the ED as a visible symbol of their commitment to excellence. Additionally, they will be spotlighted in ENA's member magazine, ENA Connection.

The Mercy ED receives an average of 35,000 patient visits per year. In December 2023, Mercy Hospital broke ground on a $6 million modernization project to upgrade its ED. The project focuses on upgrading the aesthetics and layout of the facility, allowing Mercy to maximize its overall operational effectiveness. The modernization project is expected to be completed in the next few weeks.

Mercy Hospital has been serving the surrounding Rockville Centre community for over 100 years. Emergency staff members are trained to treat all medical conditions, illnesses and injuries. They use advanced diagnostic imaging and consult with Mercy Hospital's specialists in multiple disciplines. Additionally, Mercy Hospital has earned Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA), providing elderly patients who visit its ED with the necessary expertise, equipment and resources to deliver optimal care.
