What is Electroconvulsive Therapy?
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is an FDA-approved, effective treatment for people suffering from major depression and other mental illnesses, such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, when other treatments, including medications and psychotherapy, have not worked. It is also used for people who require rapid treatment such as being at risk for suicide.
How does ECT work?
Chemical pathways in the brain affect mood and behavior. ECT uses an electrical pulse to stimulate and disturb these pathways and change brain chemistry. The procedure is done under anesthesia and administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist, a psychiatrist, and specialized nursing staff.
How fast will symptoms improve?
Symptoms usually improve after 6-12 treatments over a 4-5 week period. Some people may see their symptoms improve as early as week two.
Who manages my care?
Our ECT team of highly trained specialists will work closely with your referring provider, you and your family to provide the very best care possible.
Where can I go for treatment?
The outpatient ECT program is located at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre, NY.
