Thirty years ago, Phyllis Bond’s aunt let her know there was a job opportunity at Good Samaritan Hospital. The position was in Dietary, working in the hospital’s cafeteria. During her five years of service there, supervisors noted her positive attitude and that she always made the effort to greet patrons with a smile. They offered her the opportunity to take on a larger role, working in Doctors’ Emergency Services, contacting doctors to notify them in emergency situations such as childbirth.

Over the course of twenty years, Phyllis would continue to grow into further roles within Communications. Supervisors, who appreciated her people skills as well as her pleasant voice, encouraged her to become a telephone operator for the hospital. Phyllis excelled and became the lead operator, and her voice making announcements through the PA system was part of the everyday rhythm of the hospital for many years.

Again, Phyllis’ dedicated service found her in demand for more opportunities at Good Samaritan Hospital and she began working as a concierge, providing services to patients in the hospital, placing them in rooms, overseeing transportation and discharges, and more. Phyllis recalls that on several occasions while working in this role, she was present for childbirths in cars at the hospital’s front entrance. “Someone would come in, saying a woman was about to have a baby, and a few seconds later when staff got to the car, the baby was already coming!”

During all this time, from working in the cafeteria to her role as concierge, one observation always struck Phyllis. She could always see the impact small acts of kindness could have for the people around her. “The very smallest things you do for people, people praise you and are so appreciative. We overlook small, kind deeds, but in the hospital people notice. Helping someone tie their shoes or waiting with them while someone brings a car around, these things are so appreciated by people,” she says.

Today, Phyllis has again taken on a new role, as an administrative assistant in Employee Health. There, she will be a valued resource in supporting the Employee Health team, including assisting with all matters related to occupational health, compliance for new hires and more. Thirty years ago, Phyllis’ aunt told her Good Samaritan was a good hospital to work for, and after all this time she agrees and is glad to be a part of the Good Samaritan family. “Working here has allowed me to raise my own two children,” she says, and she’s excited to see where her career with the hospital will continue to take her.
